Newton said Favre had a major influence on his decision to sign with agent Bus Cook, who also represents the outgoing Vikings QB.
“When Brett Favre came into the meeting room as I was trying to decide which agent I was going to select, I seen Brett and Brett’s calling me by my name, and I was like wow,” Newton said while appearing on “NFL Total Access” on NFL Network. “It’s unheard of and it’s a dream come true just to be acknowledged and being able to talk and call Brett any time I feel like.”
Newton, who led Auburn to the BCS national title last month, knows he has much to do as he takes the next step to the NFL.
“I was driving an automatic in college, now I have to step into the Ferrari and a stick shift, so to speak, in the NFL,” he said. “It’s a car, but I’m hopefully trying to take this car for miles and miles.”
Newton touched on a few other points during his 10-minute interview:
» He said he hasn’t decided what events he will participate in at the combine: “Not saying that I’m not. Not saying that I’m going to. It’s just something that I have to evaluate with and talk to my so-called team — I call them Team Newton — and we’re just going to talk and see what’s (in my) best interest.”
» He will have a pro day next week: “We just wanted to have a day to show what is my progression up until this point. I understand that the media has a job to do, and I have a job to do as well. During this whole process, ever since I’ve been in San Diego, everybody’s had a question mark on, ‘What is Cam Newton doing?’ So from everybody on my end, we feel like this is the best opportunity to show what I have progressed into and what I’m trying to accomplish.
» On his leadership ability: “It’s just something that a person has to be gifted with. Not to sound arrogant by no means, but playing the quarterback position takes on a demeanor in itself. You can’t do the same things that a receiver does, or an offensive lineman.”
